Andrew Strauss scored an excellent 106 to help England register an unlikely victory in the second Test at Old Trafford. The home side scored the 294 runs needed for the loss of just four wickets, the highest run chase achieved at this ground.
Strauss was assisted by Vaughan (48) and Pietersen (42) , with Bell and Collingwood not out at the end. Best of all was the positive attitude displayed by all the batsmen - it seemed like they had suddenly woken up and realised just how average the opposition were.
New Zealand, for their part, must be wondering how the lost a game they had been running for two and a half days. Once again they batted poorly in one innings and threw away any gains they had made. England must take heart from this win, and push on to take the series 2-0 in the final Test at Trent Bridge.
