Former South Africa bowler Allan Donald has sung the praises of Warwickshire bowler Chris Woakes by saying that the youngster can have a successful career playing for England.
Last season, Chris Woakes enjoyed a very successful first campaign with Warwickshire and helped them gain promotion from Division Two of the County Championship.
In total, the 20-year-old took 50 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 23.80. These are very impressive statistics for someone who was playing in his first season of professional cricket.
The potential of Chris Woakes was recognised by England earlier this month when he was named as part of the 30-man squad for this summer’s World Twenty20 tournament.
This could be just the beginning of a very successful international career for Chris Woakes, according to his bowling coach and former South Africa opening bowler Allan Donald.
The Warwickshire coach believes it is a safe cricket bet to make that Chris Woakes can handle the pressure that expectation brings because he is a ‘very natural cricketer’. Allan Donald says that after several chats with the youngster, it seems that he ‘isn’t fazed by anything’.
As for what the future may hold for Chris Woakes, Allan Donald says that there is ‘no question’ that he will play for England at one stage. As for when this is, no-one is quite sure. There will possibly be a fear of playing him too early in his development.
For now though, Chris Woakes will need to concentrate on playing for Warwickshire this season. Then, whatever comes of some good form, will come.
