If there is a God, he must hate cricket! The third Ashes test finally got under way at 5pm today, the rest of the day washed out by rain forcing the day’s cricket into 30 overs.
Ricky Ponting won the toss and chose to bat, but Australia were forced into making a change when wicket keeper Brad Haddin suffered a suspected broken finger in the warm up. After agreement with the England team officials, Australia introduced Graham Manou for his international debut.
But it was Shane Watson, recalled to the team in place of Phillip Hughes, who shone during the short game today, scoring an unbeaten62 by close of play as Australia seized the initiative with Katich the only casualty during the spell, falling lbw to Swann.
Watson and Ponting will return to the crease tomorrow, weather permitting, but tonight finished with Australia 126 for 1.
