Ramprakash close to landmark

John Gawen - Wednesday 14.05.08, 11:21am

Run machineSurrey’s Mark Ramprakash goes into today’s county championship game against Hampshire looking to score his 100th first-class century.

Ramprakash, 38, has scored an astonishing 48 centuries in the seven years since he moved to Surrey from Middlesex.  He has scored over 2000 runs, averaging over 100, in each of the last two English summers.

If Ramprakash achieves his milestone today, it will send a timely two-finger reminder to the England selectors.  He was picked for, and dropped from, the national side several times between 1991 and 2002 - finishing with 2350 runs at 27.32 from 52 starts.  Maybe not the best set of statistics, but if anyone else had been in his sort of recent form they would surely have earned a recall.

Age may be against him, but his sheer ability is unquestioned.
