Andre Nel is ready to quit South African cricket after being left out of the squad for the upcoming tour of India. His place has gone to Charl Langeveldt as the selectors have again been told to include six coloured players in the fourteen man squad.
A clearly fired-up Nel took 4-27 as the South Africans beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in today’s one day game in Mirpur, taking a 2-0 lead in the series.
Nel had initially refused to play in the match after learning of his non-selection, but was persuaded to take part by coach Mickey Arthur who later commented “I told him how important it was for him to take the field. And though still very upset, he eventually agreed to play.”
To me, Nel has never looked like a man who needed much to get him in a rage. If they wanted to get him motivated for the game then it worked, but if they are serious about dropping him then I don’t blame him for walking away. For all his silly pseudo-aggressive antics on the field there can’t be many players who have ever tried harder for their country.
