Mixed news for former heroes

John Gawen - Thursday 08.05.08, 21:21pm

“Deadly”Two of England’s stars of the 70’s were in the news today, though with mixed fortunes.

Legendary left-arm spinner and Kent stalwart Derek Underwood was named as the next president of the M.C.C.  He will take over from Mike Brearley on October 1st.  Underwood played in 82 tests for his country, taking 297 wickets at an average of 25.83.  “Deadly” was well named for his ability to turn the ball at quite a considerable speed - he was almost unplayable on a drying wicket.

Opening batsman Geoffrey Boycott will not, however, be joining the England set-up as a batting coach.  Boycott was a selfish, dour and quite extraordinary player who scored 8114 test runs at an average of 47.72.

I wonder how Pietersen and Flintoff would have taken to spending hours mastering the forward defensive.  People don’t play the game like Boycott any more, the world’s in too much of a rush.
