Brendon McCullum hit a sparkling run-a-ball 97 to rescue New Zealand on a rain-affected opening day of the first Test at Lord’s.
The weather put paid to any cricket in the morning session, but after lunch Michael Vaughan won the toss and put the visitors in. They were soon in trouble, getting to 105-5 before the big-hitting ‘keeper started to fire. Panesar finally got him just 3 short of a place on the famous honours board. The Kiwis closed on 208-6.
Anderson with 3-42 was the pick of the bowlers, although they will all be a bit disappointed with their efforts on a day when conditions for bowling were excellent.
