Robert Key scored 178 not out on the first day of Kent’s match against the touring New Zealanders at Canterbury. He was ably supported by James Tredwell (123*) as the home side finished on 324-1.
Key scored two centuries against the Kiwis in the corresponding fixture four years ago. Kent won that game by 9 wickets, but the weather will probably have the final say this time around.
He must now be pressing for a recall to the England side - none of the incumbent batsmen covered themselves in glory this winter, and the middle order could benefit from a bit of a shake-up. Key never quite established himself in the Test side - he averages 31 from his 15 matches - but he is a batsman who goes on to get big runs once he’s in.
