Simon Jones, the 29-year old pace bowler and hero of the 2005 Ashes winning England side, is fit and wants his place back in the Test squad.
Jones has only played 5 county championship matches since his last Test appearance against the Aussies in the 4th test at Trent Bridge. He took 18 wickets during the Ashes series and played a huge role in England’s triumph. Remember him throwing the ball at Mathew Hayden during the one-dayers and refusing to back down? In many ways that act of confrontation set the tone for England’s success.
Jones has moved from Glamorgan to Worcestershire this season, and hopes the fresh start will enable him to forget the run of bad luck with injuries that he has endured.
Of his chances with England, Jones said: “There is always a place up for grabs. There are four bowlers in there at the moment but no-one’s place is for certain. You only need one bad game and the doubts creep in. I’m confident I can get back in the England side if I can show what I am capable of.”
I wish him luck. After the mystifying demise of Steve Harmison we could do with a bit of aggression in the bowling department.
