India need to win the third Test against South Africa beginning tomorrow in Kanpur to save the series. The first match was a draw. The second a thumping win for the visitors, who bowled the Indians out for just 76 in their first innings.
South Africa are hoping to become only the third side to win a series in India in the last 20 years. Avoiding defeat will also move them above their hosts and up to second in the Test match rankings.
The Kanpur track is traditionally batsman friendly - 12 of the 19 matches played here have ended as a draw. However, the wicket for this game, dry and cracked already, has been described as a “shocker” by S.A. coach Mickey Arthur. It should be a spinners’ dream - the Indians hoping to negate the opposition’s powerful seam attack.
India may well play three spinners here, provided injury-hit skipper Kumble is fit, as they look to force a result.
