Setanta Sports, the subscription based TV sports channel, have expressed an interest in bidding for the rights to show England’s home Test matches from 2009. This would, of course, include the 2009 Ashes series.
Sky currently has an exclusive four-year contract in place with the ECB to show the games. This latest development makes it even more unlikely that coverage will return to free-to-air TV (i.e. BBC or Channel4) when that contract finishes.
Setanta has only recently branched out into cricket, acquiring the UK rights to show live games from the upcoming IPL. They will be showing all 59 games in the tournament which runs from April 18th to June 1st.
