The first test at Lord’s petered out into the much predicted draw. With well over a day lost to the bad weather, some would say this was inevitable. I disagree.
The bowlers misfired on day one, in ideal swing bowling conditions. The batsmen came and went cluelessly on Sunday. They should have been looking to press their advantage – after all only one team was ever likely to win the match. Instead they pottered along, or tossed away their wickets cheaply. Once Pietersen went for three it was as if no-one else fancied taking up the challenge.
Then again yesterday, the bowlers were in with a sniff having taken three wickets before lunch – but after that it was all too easy for Oram and co. to save the game. Where was the hostility, the ambition, the desire to make something happen?
England are a team drifting nowhere at the moment. New Zealand might just have enough to wake them up.
