England’s bowlers need just 5 more wickets to wrap up the third and final Test against New Zealand in Napier and take the series 2-1.
Set an unlikely 552 to win in just under 2 days, the Kiwis reached 147-1 before losing 4 cheap wickets in the final session of play. They closed on 222-5, needing a miracle to save them. Monty Panesar, with 3-49, bowled beautifully, aided by Stuart Broad who took the other two wickets to fall.
Special mention for Stephen Fleming who reached 66 in his final Test innings, thereby finishing with a career average of 40.06. The warmth of the ovation as he left, from crowd and England players, was lovely to see. In many ways it was the typical Fleming knock - stroke the opposition effortlessly all round the park, get to 50, then give it away. The rueful smile as he walked off suggested he knew this for himself!
