India’s Rahul Dravid hit the 25th century of his Test career during the fourth day of the current match against South Africa in Chennai. In doing so he became only the sixth batsman in the history of the game to pass the 10000 run landmark. He is the third Indian after Gavaskar and Tendulkar to achieve this feat.
Virender Sehwag hit a magnificent 319 as India finished all out for 627, a lead of 87. By the close South Africa had reached 131-1, losing opener and captain Smith for 35, to lead by 44 runs. A draw now seems the only likely outcome.
The other batsmen to have achieved the 10000 run mark are Australians Allan Border and Steve Waugh, and the magical West Indian Brian Lara. Dravid took 120 Tests to get there, making him the second fastest of the six. Lara took just 111 matches to reach the same number of runs.
Dravid has always been the most classically brilliant of the current crop of Indian stars, often in the shadow of the arguably more gifted Tendulkar. Well done to “the wall”.
