Former England opening batsman Marcus Trescothick has had to return home from India where he had been involved in the Champions League Twenty20 with county side Somerset, following a recurrence of his stress related illness.

Trescothick scored 17 runs in the two innings that he has taken part in, helping to take Somerset into the second phase of the tournament but will now take no further part in the competition.

The player has struggled with the illness in the past and has twice been sent home from International duty, the first time in India in February 2006 and then in Australia in November of the same year. He also collapsed at Heathrow while waiting to fly out with Somerset for a pre-season tour of the United Arab Emirates in March 2008.

While Trescothick had not been selected for England since his return from Australia in 2006, he formally retired from international cricket following the events of March 2008.

Both Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss have tried in their capacity as England captain to get Trescothick to come out retirement for his country but the player has rejected their appeals.

The truth is that England have never found a replacement for the aggressive opening batsman in limited overs cricket.
