Brett Lee focus on regaining Ashes place

Thomas Rooney - Monday 16.03.09, 11:28am

It seems inevitable that the Australia cricket team look like they might be in excellent form when they arrive for The Ashes tour this summer.

They have recently recorded a fantastic series victory over South Africa and a number of important factors appear to be slipping into place. Philip Hughes for example has come in to replace Matthew Hayden and scored a bucket full of runs.

The bowling attack has also had a great deal of success in recent weeks with Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle firmly establishing themselves in the side.

Combined with the experience and talent of Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey and Michael Clarke, this makes a very decent test team. It is one that is still in transition, but showing a great deal of promise.

By the summer, Australia could have another experienced member of their team back – Brett Lee, to make anyone think twice about having a bet on England’s chances of winning The Ashes.

The fast bowler is on the comeback trail after having ankle surgery and he is hoping that the Indian Premier League will be a chance for his to prove his fitness ahead of the English summer.

Brett Lee says that he is ‘on schedule’ to make his international comeback against England, something which he is very much ‘looking forward to’.

The 32-year-old admitted that the current seam attack has played ‘extremely well’ in the last couple of months, but he believes this can only be ‘healthy’ for Australian cricket.

As for Brett Lee getting back into the side, well he appears hopeful that his ‘record will speak for itself’ when it comes to selection. For now though, he is just focused on ‘getting back on the park’ for the Mohali Kings next month.

Should he manage to prove his fitness between now and the first Ashes test, he will definitely get the nod to play in my opinion. His pace and aggression will be very valuable to Ricky Ponting as they look to avenge their defeat in England back in 2005.
