Australia torment England bowlers in Ashes

John Williams - Thursday 09.07.09, 18:47pm

Second Day of the first Ashes test started not too badly for England, the tail enders making a remarkable 99 between them with the innings closing at 435 all out. Graham Swann hit an unbeaten 47 in a partnership with James Anderson who made 26.

Flintoff put the early pressure on the Australian openers,  bowling at breakneck speed it eventually paid off when Hughes was caught by Prior at 60 for 1, Hughes having already made 36.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting then entered the fray and between him and Katich took the score up to 143 for 1 at tea.

The final session was absolute torture for the England fans as both Ponting and Katich hit centuries and ended the day unbeaten, with Katich on 104 and Ponting on 100.

The day ended with Australia in a comfortable position at 249-1 in reply to Englands 435 all out.

The Test was fun until the Australians started batting. The first hour was simply great when Swann and Anderson were taking the sword to Australia.
