The third day of the first Ashes test ended under floodlights- the first time in Britain that a test match has been floodlit- after following the same pattern as yesterday. Australia’s Ponting and Katich continued to heap misery on England’s bowlers and fielders for most of the morning, before a crazy spell just before lunch when England claimed three wickets.
Katich was first to go to an lbw off Anderson at 299, then Hussey was caught by Prior off Anderson at 325 and finally the big scalp of Ponting fell to Panesar on 331 for 4. Ponting scoring a magnificent 150 and Katich almost equal to his captain in an excellent partnership with 122.
Lunch was taken with the score at 348 for 4 and England appeared to have found themselves back in the game. The afternoon period saw Australia once again picking off the English bowlers, with no further wickets taken. At tea Australia had already overtaken the England score going in at 458 for 4. Three overs later rain stopped play and it was almost two hours before play resumed under the floodlights, for just six overs. Just enough time for England to take the wicket of Clarke, caught Prior off Broad.
England 435 all out Australia 479 for 5
