New England captain Andrew Strauss has backed Kevin Pietersen to have a successful tour of the West Indies after the saga which led to him resigning from his position as skipper.
Andrew Strauss even said that Kevin Pietersen can score lots of runs in the rest of his England career to confirm his place as a cricket ‘legend’. The new captain then went on to say that he expects Kevin Pietersen to score ‘millions of runs’ against the West Indies in the next two test series.
Many sections of the media, of course, have questioned how Kevin Pietersen will perform under Andrew Strauss the skipper. They believe that the Hampshire man’s ego will be too big to revert back to being just a player having had a taste of the captaincy.
Andrew Strauss doesn’t believe that this will be a problem though. Having spoken to Kevin Pietersen a few times since being appointed as captain, he says that he has been ‘pleasantly surprised by his attitude’.
This is hopefully how things will remain for the future. During the West Indies tour it would be very significant if England are successful and Kevin Pietersen is scoring runs. This would go some way to putting the recent problems in the past and help focus on the year ahead.
Speaking about the future, Andrew Strauss has revealed that he is ‘fairly hopeful’ that his appointment is a long-term one. He admits that captaining England in the Ashes this summer would be a great honour.
It is the West Indies first though for Andrew Strauss England in a series that the cricket odds will expect them to win. Considering the team’s recent problems though, this is far from forgone conclusion.
England will have to be united, focused and determined to prove their critics wrong. Should Kevin Pietersen score the amount of runs Andrew Strauss is expecting him to, this will also be very helpful!
