Andrew Flintoff has announced that he will retire from test cricket after the Ashes series. The injury stricken all rounder is currently fighting to be fit for the second test against Australia although it is doubtful that he will be ready in time for selection.

Flintoff says that retirement from test matches is something that has been on his mind for a while and the latest knee injury sustained in the first Ashes test match has forced him to make a decision.

The player has been dogged by injuries throughout his career, enduring four ankle operations and despite recent knee surgery, still needed pain killing injections to enable him to play. He says that his body tells him it is time to stop.

However the 2005 Ashes hero will see out the current Ashes series, saying he will do everything he needs to do to get on the cricket field, adding “I am desperate to make my mark.”

What a fairy tale ending it would make for Flintoff if he were to make as telling a contribution to this years Ashes series as, he did in England’s finest moment in modern Ashes history, back in 2005.

Flintoff was overbowled in the last match. Hope he can play tomorrow and change history by beating Australia at Lord’s.

I agree, it would be great for him to go out on a high.

It is certainly a fairy tale career, cut short by recurring injuries.
