Alastair Cook says he would love to captain the England side if reports of Andrew Strauss wanting to rest for the Bangladesh tour in Spring have any foundation, but says he did also add, “It’s not like I won’t be able to sleep at night if it doesn’t happen.”
Strauss has indicated that he might rest himself for the month long Bangladesh tour which is sandwiched between next month’s trip to South Africa and another busy summer schedule.
In his capacity as vice captain Cook would be the obvious replacement for Strauss and the lower profile tour would seem the ideal opportunity for Cook to learn his trade although he admits he would prefer to have more experience at county level before he steps into Strauss’ shoes.
“But I’ve been with England since I was 21, so I haven’t had much chance to do that.” said Cook, adding; “As yet, the vice-captaincy hasn’t added any pressure. It’s very easy in cricket to become self-obsessed, especially us batsmen. So being forced to think about other players and issues can be a help.”
