The ICC has succumbed to pressure from the Pakistan Cricket Board, and agreed “in principle” to change the result of the controversial 2006 Test against England.
Umpire Darrell Hair awarded the match to England when Pakistan refused to take the field after tea on the fourth day, amid accusations of ball tampering. The charge was later dropped, and Hair suspended from the ICC elite panel of umpires. The result will now, apparently, be a draw.
This whole sorry affair has rumbled on for nearly two years now - does anyone really think there’s any point in changing the result now? No doubt there are some political machinations in the bowels of the ICC annual meeting, but surely the treatment of Hair, and lack of evidence against any Pakistan cricketers should have been enough to close the matter.
They’ve resurrected it now - so if you don’t like the way the match is going, or the umpire upsets you, just refuse to take the field. Apparently you can’t lose!
